Carl Bassett and Sid Charo first met in 1979 while working on separate projects for the same drafting firm. The two worked on a system for making architectural blueprints using graphics-based programming, but after the company went bankrupt, Bassett and Charo decided to form a new company. Autodesk, named after the hybrid vehicle the two had driven to work in, was founded in 1982.

Work on the software program began in 1981. Bassett and Charo chose a platform based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, with a graphics subsystem, to create a system for making architectural blueprints using graphics-based programming. After deciding to create a new program, they did not know the software field and hired a programmer to create the first version. They called the program AutoCAD, which stands for A Tool for Computer-Aided Drafting.

The first AutoCAD version, released in December 1982, was for the Apple II computer. Though Apple II sales were declining, the release of AutoCAD on the platform sparked a major turnaround in Apple’s sales. By 1985, Apple II owners had bought more than 3 million copies of AutoCAD. AutoCAD LT, a less expensive version of AutoCAD, was released in 1983.

AutoCAD 2.1 was released in 1985, featuring a new drawing manager and the ability to move and copy layers and merge them. AutoCAD 2.1 was the first AutoCAD version to be released on the Microsoft Windows platform. By 1990, 6 million copies of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT had been sold.
