The Golden Hills are a basalt complex on the north shore of the Umpqua River in the Umpqua National Forest in Lake County, Oregon, United States. The name was given by locals when the foothills were covered in yellow alkali.
The hills are separated from the north end of Dunsmuir Gorge by the Taylor River. The only access to the Golden Hills is by crossing a bridge from the south end of the river.
The area was in the Umpqua Drainage Basin until the 1990s when the Umpqua Valley flood control project was completed. The canal between Silver Lake and Taylor Lake was filled and the flow from Lake Taylor was diverted into the Canal. The water flow through the canal and through Taylor Lake into the Creek provided irrigation for the district at the expense of the Umpqua. The remaining water drained through the Kings River into the Pacific Ocean. At the time of the project, the District received an average of 75,000 acre-feet of water from the west. After the project was completed, the district began experiencing low water levels and erratic flow. Over the next several years, Taylor Lake was lowered by to provide for irrigation and stream flow for the Kings River Project. Near the end of 2002, the District was able to buy Taylor Lake and gain most of its water supply, but still did not have access to the basalt hills. Until the construction of the Brown Creek diversion dam, the District was losing up to 40,000 acre-feet of water per year. By 2002, the District had constructed the Brown Creek diversion dam which has been successful in providing for more than 40,000 acre-feet of water to the district.
The Golden Hills are noted for their rare type of volcanic rocks. The red, green and yellow, rocks were formed about 300 million years ago from lava flows erupted from a series of volcanos within the Umpqua volcanic field.
The Golden Hills are located at the southern end of the Umpqua River Basin. The basalt rocks and soils are weather-resistant and well-drained. The alkali soils and sub-surface drainage are not ideal for growing
