The AutoCAD product was initially available for the Apple II family of computers. Later versions of the app were available for the Macintosh, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, and IBM PC-compatible platforms. AutoCAD was first released for MS-DOS in the mid 1980s, and its first major graphical user interface (GUI) rewrite for Windows was in 1989.

The 1980s CAD programs that were available for microcomputers had previously been designed to be used at separate workstations (terminals), and were not multi-user or graphical in nature; they were primarily used for simple drafting tasks. For example, the Autocad predecessor called KeyCAD had a very limited menu system, and it was required that an operator sit at a terminal connected to a mainframe computer to work.

Ballew came to believe that CAD should be much more than a drafting program, and should have many of the same features as a word processor: graphical, multi-user, and accessible by users with various degrees of expertise. Ballew and the ARG team started developing AutoCAD in the late 1970s, and by 1981 they had the first version of a prototype. Over the years the ARG team continued to add features to AutoCAD.

AutoCAD is available for Windows, macOS and UNIX platforms. The Windows, macOS, and UNIX versions use either a client–server architecture, or a client–only architecture where the user workstation is connected to the server which stores the model database. One major difference between the two versions is that the OS X version works on servers, and the Windows and UNIX versions work on clients.

The latest Windows, macOS, and UNIX operating systems are required to use AutoCAD, although an older one may still run the software as well. AutoCAD 2014, released in January 2015, runs on Mac OS X 10.9 and Windows 8 and Windows 7.
