Python str.format with keyword argument %s with different length strings

I’m using python 2.7 and am struggling to understand the correct usage of the %% operator when using keyword arguments. I have a string which I’ve constructed in Python as below:
str1 = ‘1234_apple_56789’

I then pass this string to an API function that requires the first value (i.e. 1234) to be a number followed by the value (i.e. 56789). I can execute the following call using the API successfully:
RESULT = api.call(‘111222333344445556667777888’, str1)

To ensure my API function is accepting the variable length argument, I’ve done the following:
def api_call(**kwargs):
for name, value in kwargs.items():
if isinstance(value, bool):
value = str(value)
kwargs[name] = value
return kwargs

I’ve confirmed that this works and is doing what I need it to do.
However, I notice that this does not work with the %s operators. I would assume that the API function would understand that the first argument is a string and that the rest of the arguments should be formatted as an integer or number. My code looks like the following:
def api_call(**kwargs):
for name, value in kwargs.items():
if isinstance(value, bool):
value = str(value)
kwargs[name] = value
return kwargs

kwargs = api_call(1, 2, ‘3’, ‘4’, ‘%s_foo’)
print(kwargs)

To my surprise, I get the following error:
KeyError: ‘3

Overchunked is a mashup of a game genre that, admittedly, is fairly new and an age-old classic that is long overdue a comeback! Throw in the recent DLC to MegaMan Battle Network and you’ve got something rather close to greatness! 🙂
Overchunked is a “squares-based” title that, to its credit, has no pre-sets. You create your own characters, populate them with the best assets from MegaMan Battle Network and then see where your l33t saves and battle takes you. Seriously, it’s what you make it!
Basically, the game is a match-3 puzzle game where you see a grid of interconnected squares that you need to move from space-to-space and collect the individual sprites (cards) or enemy characters (Foes) to fight your way to the end. While this can be played in a traditional manner (by-sector-crawling), the game has some interesting mechanics that make the player think out of the box to see just what it is they’re getting into. The game features a clever “if any adjacent squares match, you can merge them into one unit” mechanic that gives you a bit of a breather while also fighting off enemy spawns as they converge. There’s also a “standard” mode that will challenge you with more difficult settings; as well, there’s also a “Boss mode” that sees you fight against eight unique “Bosses,” each with their own challenges and tactics. Although we can’t wait to see how you guys break the game, we’re just glad it’s here!
