The HRTF 3D module is a convolution module, used to emulate HRTF from a 3D environment, whereby HRTF is defined based on directional information. The convolution module can be configured in such a way that the sound source position (the listener) and the directional characteristics of the used HRTF are carefully matched to the real listener’s position and set of HRTFs. The module can be used to optimize the HRTF for static setups, or it can be used in an environment where the listener/sound source position is controlled, such as the user wearing headphones, or a sound room where an acoustic position can be set.
The HRTF 3D module allows to use a set of HRTFs or a continuous synthesis of HRTFs, in a manner that the listener/sound source position is matched to the real HRTF. You can download IR ‘Environmental Room’ HRTF files for free from 10Hz to 20KHz. Recorded on a calibrated microphone, these files represent a more realistic model of room acoustics than most virtual HRTFs from this website, and are therefore suitable for working towards greater understanding of the principles of HRTF design.
The audio files were recorded in a studio at P4 Building at The Open University using a calibrated PESQ 2000 microphone and TDK tape; each file is the result of one complete recording session, and will therefore not have silent periods in between.

The HRTF 3D SE module is designed for the purpose of convolution of an HRTF measured at the IRCAM in order to assess the binaural performance of the hearing aid.

When a 2D object such as a virtual speaker is positioned in a virtual space with binaural stereo positioning, the left ear should perceive the sound reaching it from a direction given by the left head impulse response (HRIR), while the right ear should perceive the sound reaching it from a direction given by the right head impulse response (HRIR). If the listener stands in front of the virtual speaker, it is possible to have a spatial image of the virtual source. This explains the name of the module: Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF).

The HRTF module enables us to simulate the sound received at the eardrum of a listener when an object (a virtual source) is perceived as being placed in a 3D virtual space, and to modify this sound by convolution with the HRTF measured in the ear. The convolution works as follows: the sound which reaches the eardrum of a listener is represented by a wave. This wave is convolved with a HRTF, which represents the impulse response of the canal-tympanic system. Thus the auditory impression corresponds to the convolution of the original wave and the impulse response of the HRTF. The convolution is realised by the convolution operator, which may be computed by the convolution operators implemented in the HRTF 3D SE module.

The HRTF 3D SE module has been designed to provide efficient processing with respect to the number of parameters by using a high resolution look-up table.

When the musical material is delivered to the listener, the sound is spatially manipulated by the HRTF module according to the point of the space the virtual source is perceived to be in. This means that the parameter of the spatial distribution is controlled by a virtual source placed in a virtual space with a listener standing in front of it.

Performance

Resolution is determined by the number of points and the length of the look-up table. The parameter distribution is also controlled by a number of factors:

— The number of sources and its distribution in the virtual space

— The distribution of the listener in the space

— If the listener has some spatial control, this spatial distribution

Thus the more sources and the listener is distributed in the space, the higher the number of points are.
