Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

History of AutoCAD
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design and drafting (CAD) and engineering (CAM) software application that is used for the drafting, design, and visualization of 3D models and 2D drawings. It includes features for creating, viewing, modifying, and analyzing 3D models. It also offers features for modeling environments, importing and converting 2D data to 3D, and creating orthographic views of 3D objects.
AutoCAD is available for Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, iOS, Android, and Linux.
The beginnings of AutoCAD can be traced back to 1982, when on a team of ten professionals led by two engineers at the consulting firm Fialkow & Company, the inventor of the 2D CAD system AutoLISP, Dave Nussbaum, also worked at a graphics terminal to create what is considered to be the first CAD application ever written.
When it was unveiled in 1982, it was named ADT. It was the first graphical computer-aided design program to include numerous new tools. At its debut, it had a small user interface (UI) window and used the first proprietary LISP language to create drawing objects. A retail version of ADT was then released, but it contained many bugs and was not as powerful as the initial beta version. A new, reworked version of ADT, containing over 100 new features, was also released. The full, retail version was released in 1984, and the company named it AutoCAD.
The first version of AutoCAD, or ADT (adt1.xls, circa 1983).
AutoCAD in the 1980s
Autodesk continued to improve the product line. In 1985, the product line was split into different product areas. The software company defined the following areas for their CAD products:
The primary product is the one for which most of the money is made. It is the CAD application that is the most often purchased by companies.
The product area that is considered the core CAD product.
PCL Plus sells components and is marketed to companies that need full CAD software products but cannot afford the full AutoCAD or Design Product Line.
The product area that is considered the CAD suite product.
IBM Releases of AutoCAD 2017 «Running» AutoLISP With R, of which one variant is the Embarcadero Delphi AutoCAD Package.
AutoLISP is an application programming interface that provides the basic programming language necessary for customization of AutoCAD. It is also available as part of a free add-on pack called «Adobe Illustrator Plug-in» for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT that enables additional capabilities for vector, raster, and glyph commands. The free add-on pack provides the ability to draw geometric shapes, read common file formats, save and open files, and generate drawings directly in Adobe Illustrator.
AutoCAD VBA Code
AutoCAD VBA provides a variety of programming functions to control the user interface, load drawing files, access drawing information, perform post-processing tasks, and handle more advanced drawing operations.
The ObjectARX development team has open sourced AutoCAD’s.NET customizations. It was created from the official patent pool and is an open source project which was created by Autodesk (since the migration from ObjectARX to AutoCAD was previously announced in 2013).
Using these, an application can be written that will behave in the same way as AutoCAD, but is compatible with version X. The applications written using the standard API are not guaranteed to work on all operating systems and versions, but the technical documentation does state that the API is designed to be platform independent.
Plugin for AutoCAD Architecture
AutoCAD Architecture is a plug-in that integrates architectural information and capabilities into AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD and any AutoCAD instance. Autodesk Architecture is different from other plugins because it has been designed from the ground up as a data driven architecture. This means that it can automate data exchange with external architecture applications such as Civil 3D and others. Architecture Information can be obtained from any source which includes databases, CAD systems and various web services. Using this information the Autodesk Architecture plugin can dynamically update any feature in the drawing including 3D models, specifications, MEP data, construction documents, facilities management, engineering design, municipal planning and business systems.
